After completing two evidence-based courses offered by KEIRO®, Richard Murakami has been encouraging his peers to take advantage of KEIRO’s free Genki Living® programs. Richard commented on his experiences with A Matter of Balance, designed to help participants prevent falls and increase activity levels among older adults, and Smart Driver (previously known as Driver Safety), presented in partnership with AARP, which offers strategies to help older drivers maintain confidence behind the wheel. He shared, “I believe everyone over 65 [years of age] should take this class. It reminds you of what’s important to do and you learn new things, too.”
Richard, along with Japanese American National Museum volunteers, enrolled in A Matter of Balance, offered by KEIRO at JANM over the summer. He pointed out the convenience of the familiar location combined with participating in the course with fellow museum volunteers made the course even more enjoyable.
In addition to the important driving reminders, Richard and his wife realized an immediate cost savings in their auto insurance premium when they showed proof of their participation to their insurance company. An added benefit, Richard points out.
KEIRO’s Genki Living Programs offered in the community include Vitality Forums like the AARP Smart Driver classroom course, which teaches proven safety strategies to maintain confidence behind the wheel. For so many older adults, driving means independence. This refresher course highlights necessary skills for drivers as we age, how to adjust driving to compensate for age-related physical changes, helpful techniques and more.
