This past Saturday, 8/22/15, Keiro held its third Genki Conference: Veteran’s Edition, hosted by the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute. We had over 120 veterans and their loved ones from our community who participated.

The half-day conference was full of information and resources.

We had three key note presentations including:

Along with that, we also had four breakout sessions during the event which included:

  • Breakout Session A: VA Benefits and Claims
  • Breakout Session B: VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment
  • Breakout Session C: Access to VA Benefits and Resources
  • Breakout Session D: CalVet Overview

Independence at Home, a SCAN Community Service, provided free stroke screenings, Wii Bowl, and Mind Games. Almost 75% of the attendees took advantage of the stroke screening!

One attendee, a Vietnam veteran, mentioned that the speakers “really inspired [him] to seek [his] VA benefits and help.” He plans to make an appointment with the VA representative he met at the conference.

We at Keiro would like to thank all the conference attendees, speakers, volunteers, and community partners. Without your support, we could not have hosted such a successful event, and we look forward to seeing you in the future!

Community Partners include:
4th District Gardena Nisei VFW Post 1961, Go For Broke National Education Center, Japanese American Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee, Japanese American Korean War Veterans, Kazuo Masuda Memorial VFW Post 3679, Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute
Lunch was generously sponsored by Kaiser Permanente and printing was sponsored by AARP.
